Biologist with the New England Aquarium are now analyzing the
carcass of a rare water whale which has been beached on a
Plymouth beach in Boston. While the event is tragic, of course,
the event does give the scientists an opportunity to study this
nearly 2,000 pound mammal up close.

Again, beaked whales are quite rare; in fact, they are so rare
that it actually took the biologists a lot of time to properly
identify the species of the 17-foot female with the long slender
snout and purplish skin—which basically resembles a large
dolphin.

“They are so rarely seen that New England Aquarium biologists
have been conferring to determine the exact species, which they
believe to be a Sowerby’s beaked whale. Aquarium staff last
handled a beaked whale in 2006 in Duxbury,” the New England
Aquarium staff said in a statement.
